Sayings from Mark

1. The Statement About the Removal of the Bridegroom:

And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. (Mark 2:19-20; cf. Matt. 9:15; Luke 5:34-35)

2. The Sayings on the Suffering and Rejection of the Son of Man:

(a) And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and [of] the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. (Mark 8:31; cf. Matt. 16:21; Luke 9:22)

(b) For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. (Mark 9:31; cf. Matt. 17:22-23; Luke 9:44)

(c) Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again. (Mark 10:33-34; cf. Matt. 20:18-19; Luke 18:31-33)

3. The Saying at the Descent from the Mount of Transfiguration:

And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. (Mark 9:12; Matt. 17:12)

4. The Saying on the Cup and the Baptism:

But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? (Mark 10:38; cf. Matt. 20:22)

5. The "Ransom" Passage:

For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45; cf. Matt. 20:28)

6. The Parable of the Vineyard:

Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son. But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours. And they took him, and killed [him], and cast [him] out of the vineyard. (Mark 12:6-8; cf. Matt. 21:37-39; Luke 20:13-15a)

7. The Saying in the Story of the Anointing:

She hath anointed my body aforehand for the burying. (Mark 14:8; cf. Matt. 26:12)

8. The Prophecy of the Betrayal:

And in the evening he cometh with the twelve. And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me. And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, [Is] it I? and another [said, Is] it I? And he answered and said unto them, [It is] one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish. The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born. (Mark 14:17-21)

9. The Sayings at the Last Supper:

(a) Take ye: this is my body. (Mark 14:22)

(b) This is my blood of the covenant, which is shed for many. (Mark 14:24)

(c) Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God. (Mark 14:25)

10. Two Old Testament Quotations: The Stone; The Shepherd:

(a) And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? (Mark 12:10-11)

(b) And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. (Mark 14:27)

11. The Gethsemane Sayings:

(a) And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. (Mark 14:34; cf. Matt. 26:38; Luke 22:40)

(b) And he said, Abba, Father, all things [are] possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. (Mark 14:36; cf. Matt. 26:39, 42; Luke 22:42)

(c) And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly [is] ready, but the flesh [is] weak. (Mark 14:37-38; cf. Matt. 26:40-41; Luke 22:45-46)

(d) And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take [your] rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand. (Mark 14:41-42; cf. Matt. 26:45-46)

(e) And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and [with] staves to take me? I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled. (Mark 14:48-49; cf. Matt. 26:55;56; Luke 22:52-53)

12. The Cry from the Cross:

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (Mark 15:34; Matt. 27:46)

And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third [day] I shall be perfected. Sayings from John

Passion Sayings attributed to Jesus Himself in the fourth Gospel

(a) Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. (John 2:19)

(b) I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. (John 6:51)

(c) Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. (John 6:53-57)

(d) My time is not yet come. (John 7:6)

(e) My time is not yet fulfilled. (John 7:8)

(f) Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. (John 8:28)

(g) I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd layeth down his life for the sheep. (John 10:11)

(h) As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, [and] one shepherd. (John 10:15-16)

(i) Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. (John 10:17-18)

(j) Suffer her to keep it against the day of my burying. (John 12:7)

(k) And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. (John 12:23-25)

(l) Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, [saying], I have both glorified [it], and will glorify [it] again. (John 12:27-28)

(m) Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all [men] unto me. (John 12:31-32)

(n) Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. (John 13:21)

(o) I go to prepare a place for you. (John 14:2)

(p) Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)

(q) Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. (John 16:7)

(r) These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. (John 17:1-2)

(s) And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. (John 17:19)

(t) Woman, behold, thy son! ... Behold, thy mother. (John 19:26,27)

(u) I thirst. (John 19:28)

(v) It is finished. (John 19:30)
