A Course In Miracles

habit

return to "The Course" main-page:

The habit of engaging with God and His creations is easily made if you actively refuse to let your mind slip away [that is, if we "stay present" to the true self]. The problem is not one of concentration; it is the belief that no one, including yourself, is worth consistent effort. Side with me consistently against this deception, and do not permit this shabby belief to pull you back.

Editor’s note: There is much here of considerable importance. Engaging with God can become habit, second nature to us; it can be reduced to system. Compare this to Eugene Peterson's translation of Mark 11, "Embrace this god-life, really embrace it." However, right now, such is likely not the case for us. The answer to rectify does not entail an exercise of will-power. Our failure here is rooted in the ego’s sense of unworthiness. This is big, and we’ve not known just how big. In my article on “the 500 tape-recorded messages from the other side” we learn of millions of people over there, even in Summerland, who are led by the ego's "shabby belief" of self-loathing. This lack of self-respect issues as a subtle desire to be rid of oneself, and I outline seven major ways that those thus afflicted attempt to do away with themselves. This is a very significant concept, the fallout of the disheartened ego leading to existential crisis, and we’ll want to read more about this malady.
